Hard to find the cash to move house?

A Rental Grant is a once only grant of 2 weeks rent to help you pay for the cost of moving into private rental accommodation. A Rental Grant is for people in a housing crisis.

You may be eligible for a Rental Grant if:

  • you have not previously received a Rental Grant
  • you’re not currently living in the place the Rental Grant is for
  • you’re an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a temporary protection or bridging visa
  • you don’t own, or part-own
    • a residential property
    • a caravan, mobile home or live-aboard boat
  • you have less than $2500 in cash or savings between all the Rental Grant applicants (not including dependents)
  • you don’t have any outstanding debts with the department
  • your combined gross (before-tax) income doesn’t exceed the income limits for Bond Loans and Rental Grants
  • you choose a place where the rent doesn’t exceed 60% of the total household gross weekly income
  • all applicants listed on the tenancy agreement (other than dependant children) are included as applicants for the Rental Grant

AND you meet at least one of the following conditions:

  • you are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless
  • you are leaving a community-based rent scheme in Queensland to move into private rental accommodation, and apply for the Rental Grant within 14 days of leaving.

Applicants under the age of 18 or suffering from domestic violence should phone Housing Services on 13 QGOV (13 74 68).

You will need to provide proof of your income, at least 2 types of identification and residency status for each applicant, proof of current address, and documentary evidence that you meet one of the conditions above.

How do I apply for a Rental Grant?

Is my Rental Grant approved?

You will be contacted when your application has been processed. If it has been approved you will receive:

  • an approval letter
  • a Confirmation of Tenancy form.

The form must be completed by your landlord/agent of the accommodation you plan to live in.

How is the Rental Grant paid?

Once your landlord/agent sends the Confirmation of Tenancy form to us, a payment will be made directly to your landlord/agent by EFT/bank transfer.

Sometimes a payment may be made by cheque. If this happens the cheque will be made out to your landlord/agent and sent to you. You will need to give this cheque to your landlord/agent.
